About Jonah Westover, Sr.

Jonah Westover

  • Birth: May 1628 in Taunton, Somerset, England
  • Death: 15 January 1709 at Simsbury, Connecticut
  • Father: Gabriel Westover (1593–1637)
  • Mother: Joane Gifford (1598–1692)
  • Wife: Hannah Griswold (1642–1714, daughter of Edward Griswold & Margaret)

Jonah Westover was likely born in Taunton, Somerset, England about May 1628. At the age of eleven, his family sent him to America during the time the army of Charles I gained ground of the Parliament's army under General Fairfax. The entire Westover family would have immigrated (being that they were on the parliament side), but they were unable to obtain passage for all family members, and before a passage could be procured, the fortune of the war turned in favor of the parliament army, and the family remained in England while Jonah lived the remainder of his life in America. Jonah married Hannah (Ann), the daughter of Edward Griswold & Margaret. Jonah died 15 January 1708 at Simsbury, Connecticut, and was buried there.

The chart also shows dates of baptism for Jane's seven siblings, including Jonas Westover (bp. 4 May 1628), who also came to New England. See also, Somerset Parish Registers Marriages (15 vols.
