Jonas was the fourth child of ten children born to Peter Miller and Mary Stutzman. He married Catherine Hershberger. They moved to Holmes County, Ohio and lived near Walnut Creek. They were Amish-Mennonites. They had four sons and six daughters; two children died single. One son, Moses J. Miller, also called Klein Mose or Glee Mose (Little Mose) was a leading minister in the formation of the Old Order Amish.
