About Jonas Stone

Jonas Stone & Margaret MacDonald
Jonas Stone, named for his grandfather - Captain Jonas Stone of Trepassey NL was born in 1799 and he accompanied his parents as an infant from Newfoundland to Lynche's River in July of 1800. He married Margaret "Peggy" MacDonald of Soldier's Cove and they had at least 6 children before Jonas died sometime before 1838, as on that census report, his wife is listed as the widow, as was the pioneer George's wife Mary Doody.
Jonas and Peggy resided in the original Stone cabin after his father built a bigger house on the 1809 grant. The point of land just west of the bridge was known as"Peggy's Point". Jonas eventually received his own land grant up the southeast slope from the inlet of 200 acres in 1834. Peggy was more comfortable down at the shore, so Old George offered a switch with Jonas for the two equal sized grants. Later on his sons Maurice and John Henry would settle up the south slope, where the Post Road eventually cut through, and Jonas' descendants remained for generations "at the Bridge."
He continued the cooper trade learned from his father and he fished, farmed and cut timber as did "Old George". There is quite a bit of mention of Jonas in Lawrence Kavanagh's Store records for 1819/1820. He liked his tobacco and rum - especially his rum. He and George landed large catches they sold to Kavanagh, as well did work for him in exchange for goods. There are records of Jonas cutting timber at River Denys and Arichat, as well as mowing hay and so on. Though Jonas died a relative young man, wife Peggy raised the family and lived on past 95yrs of age, ending her days with their second born son John "Johnny Peggy" and wife Sarah Campbell...

"Jean George" as he was known at some point, stayed at Lynche's River after his marriage in 1843 to Mary Pierro of L'Ardoise. It is believed that they moved to Rocky Bay by 1845, however records show that their first two children were born at Lynche's River or Salmon River (Barra Head) and baptized at L'Ardoise.
The family did relocate to Arichat after 1850, where some of his descendants still live. Jean George is shown on Census reports to have been a farmer, a labourer and a blacksmith. Several of their children moved back to the St Peter's area after marriage, Henry married Josephine Jackson. James moved into the house of Minnie Stone Cameron and her husband Malcolm. Mary was her grandmother. Mary died at St Peters on May 22. 1909 at 80years of age.

(J&M) 2 John Stone b 1826
Became known as "Johnny Peggy". He married Sarah Campbell, daughter of the great fiddler Donald Campbell of Lynche's River and granddaughter of John Campbell, the settler, who played the fiddle at Lawrence Kavanagh's place for Governor James Kempt of Halifax during the 1820s in the hope that the government would grant him a lot of land at Lynche's River. They did. In the mid 1860s John is listed as an Innkeeper, the story being after building a bigger home, the old cabin was turned into a small inn along the Corbett's Cove Road. Though known locally as Johnny Peggy, in his last will and testament he is identified as John Stone "The Bridge" as several of his children, including daughter Margaret, were called.

Jack claimed innocence in a case of fathering a child with widow Sarah Kavanagh, but was forced to marry her by the law - This is from a notice in Gloucester Mass...Gloucester, May 12, 1893. John Stone, Gloucester, 30 years, born St. Peter's, Cape Breton
s/o John Stone and Sarah Campbell MARRIED Sarah J. Kavanagh, Gloucester, 2nd marriage, 28, domestic born St. Peter's, Cape Breton - d/o John McDonald and Catherine McIssac.
James Dadis, Justice of the Peace, Gloucester.
Jack never lived with her once they returned from Massachusetts. He lived his life with his sister Maggie and her husband John McDonald. He was known locally as a moonshiner and bootlegger...One of the surviving tales about Jack is in relation to his time fishing out of Gloucester, as many of the Lynche's River Stones would do. Apparently after one of his trips to the States, the Shanahan boys, who were his first cousins, came upon some timbers he had cut and peeled for fence poles, which he left until his return later on. They not only took the poles, but they built a cabin and commenced to squatting on his land. We don't know how this turned out or how they were received by Jack upon his return to Nova Scotia...

(JP) 4 Daniel Bernard Stone b - Jan 1860 - d Sept 2, 1923 Born Donald Bernard, "Dan B" as he was known, became a lock keeper and eventually lock master at St Peter's Canal. Likely named for his grandfather, the fiddler Donald Campbell, Dan at some point moved the old house from Peggy's Point, across the ice to where it is still situated today along the road from St Peter's to Sydney. The house, along with several others still standing, was built by his cousin Angus Campbell. A big man, he married twice, the second time, after the death of his wife Margaret Kyte. He met his second wife Catherine McKinnon of Sydney, at the canal where the tour boat she worked on - The Marion - used to regularly come through the locks. His picture is in the background of this page...
