About Jonathan Arledge
From the files of Pam Wilson's Arledge Family History Project:
(Most of this research was carried out by Joy Moore)
Johnathon, the 2nd child of John and Moriah, was born July 13, 1833, in Bienville Parish, LA. He died October 17, 1889, in Love County, Oklahoma and is buried in the Simon Cemetery.
The 1850 Census for Bienville shows Johnathon living in the household of Thomas McBride and Moriah Low Arledge McBride. He is listed as a 17 year old student. There is also a Mrs F. Aldridge age 75 from SC living with them We believe this to be the mother of John, and wife of Isham, Sr Arledge.
Census for 1860 Rapides Parish LA shows daughter Mary Jane as a new born female and son John as being 5 years old. There is also a Larry Patrick age 31, male, school teacher, from Ireland living with them.
Johnathon married Mary E Brinkley (the daughter of James age 60 and Anna Brinkley, age 52, in the 1860 Rapides Parish) in Bienville Parish, Louisiana on January 4, 1855). The family of James and Anna Brinkley had moved to Freestone County, Texas, where daughter Ellen married Jack Chancellor.
Their daughter Ada Chancellor married Thomas Anderson Arledge (See the information on the Chancellor family under Daniel Jackson Chancellor) In reviewing the 1860 census, the family of Mary Brinkley is shown excluding her brother James.
Johnathon and Mary had 3 children, John, Edward and Mary Jane. Johnathon joined the Army with his brother Allen, was discharged and then moved to Newton County, Texas. On the 1860 census in Rapides Parish, Johnathan and Mary were shown as having John, age 5, and Mary Jane, age 3 months. They also have a school teacher named Larry Patrick age 27 from Ireland living with them.
Then on the 1870 census in Newton County, Johnathan and Mary were shown with two boys, being John age 13 and Edward age 7. Family notes say that Edward, son of Allen's brother Johnathon, died in 1878, no burial place is known, Johnathon then took his family and on the 1880 census we find them in Freestone co, TX. John 1856 is still single and Anna Brinkley is living with them. We know that they moved from here to Fannin Co, Tx and then on to Love co OK. by 1899 where Johnathon is buried in Simon Cemetery. Mary and son John are on the 1900 census for Chickasaw Indian Territory, Love Co, Ok John has no wife, (Katie has already died) but has his two sons James Edward Arledge and Arthur Benjamin Arledge with him.
1910 has them living in Fannin co TX and 1920 shows them in Pittsburg co Ok. John is living with the children of a second marriage, Wife Katie is buried in Doc Kelly Cem in Pittsburg and the second wife
Emma Elizabeth Fox is also there. Sons Arthur Benjamin and James Edward are established in their own homes and living near by.
By 1937, John has come back to Love co to live with son Arthur and is there at his death. He is buried at
Ruebottom Cemetery in Love co. OK
We have not proved but believe there is a connection with the Arledges of Fannin Co TX but we believe it to be true as we found a deed for George Wade Arledge of Bonham in the Newton County Deed Records. We know also that John Fisher Arledge of Fannin co owned property 23 miles south west of Many, Louisiana. This would put him in the same location as the McBrides,
We have not located evidence of what happened to the daughter, Mary Jane, but we presume that she died between 1860 and 1870.
From Joy Moore: 1850 (?) census, Bienville Parish, LA. Johnathan (b 1833) listed in household of Thomas McBride. Also included Moriah (his mother, b. MS) and a Mrs. F. Aldridge (age 75, b. SC). Brother Allen (20) listed in household of Robert Low as laborer, as well as Susannah (27, b. Ark)

Could John & Mary in Newton co census
From Joy Moore:
I suspect this is the same family as the ones listed in 1870 Newton Co, TX, given the relationship to other Newton CO, TX families. Yet the ages seem to be 10 years off; this John would have been born in 1843 rather than 1833. Could the census taker have made an error? The older dates seem right, since the younger dates make them almost too young to have had the children (starting at age 14?).
