Stephen Gates of Hingham, Lancaster and Cambridge, Mass., and Some of His Descendants by the late Clarence Almon Torrey, Ph.B.

Jonathan Gates was born in Cambridge, MA, 22 June 1683; died testate in Worcester, MA, 7 Feb. 1756.

He married, in Charlestown, MA, 27 Nov. 1712, Persis Shepard, born there 23 Feb. 1690/1, baptized 9 Aug. 1691, died in Worcester 12 July 1776.

His will, dated 25 April 1743, was proved 12 May 1756. He mentioned his wife and all of his living children.

John, b. in Charlestown, MA, 26 July 1713; bapt. in Cambridge 2 Aug. 1713.

Jonathan, b. in Charlestown 8 Nov 1715; from the Cambridge church records it's clear than he was baptized 8 Jan 1715/16, but his is not in agreement with the record of his death in Charlestown, 13 Dec. 1715. Perhaps the date of death should be 13 Jan 1715/16 (or Feb, the 12th month).

Jonathan, b. probably in Charlestown, bapt. in Cambridge 20 Oct. 1717.

Persis, b. in Charlestown, 1 Aug. 1719; bapt. in Cambridge 9 Aug. 1719; d. in Worcester, 6 June 1760; m. about 1739 Adonijah Rice, who d. in Bridport, VT, 20 Jan. 1802.

Margaret, b. in Cambridge 27 Aug. 1721; bapt. 10 Sept. 1721; d. 15 Feb. 1812; m. 29 Nov. 1753 Deacon William Bigelow, who died 13 Jan. 1815. They resided in Athol, MA and Brattleborough, VT.

William, b. in Cambridge, 5 Jan. 1723/4; bapt. 12 Jan. 1723/4; d. young

Susannah, b. in Cambridge, 2 June 1726; bapt. 5 June 1726. She was mentioned in her father's will 25 April 1743.

William, b. in Cambridge 17 Oct. 1727; d. young

Abigail, b. in Cambridge, 17 Jan 1728/9 (called Margaret in birth record, but bapt. as Abigail 26 Jan. 1728/9); probably d. young; she is not mentioned in her father's will.

Jonathan, b. June 22, 1683, d. Feb. 7, 1766/6 at Worcester, MA. Married Nov. 27, 1712, Persis Shepard, daughter of John and Persis (Pierce) Shepard of Charleston, MA, who was born in 1691 and d. July 12, 1776. She was the granddaughter of Thomas and Hannah (Ensign) Shepard of Malden, MA.
