About Jordan Fernandas Nelson

He discovered and was the first user of the world famous Po cahontas Coal. He died at the age of 94 and was virtually deaf and blind for several years, but still retained his faculties at intervals. <p></p> <p>The Pocahontas Coal later became the worlds richest coal fi eld. Mr. Nelson opened the first mine, burned the first Po cahontas coal and conducted the first retail coal business in this section. He mined a fourteen-foot seam behind his blacksmith shop and peddled the coal through the mountains in half bushel sacks lashed to the back of a horse, which he sold for one cent. He once gave anold mule and a muzzle loading shotgun for 300 acres which he later sold for $20,000 and now worth much more. One of the farms he formerly owned included the present town of Pocahontas. <p></p> <p>Several years ago a maker </p> <p>was placed by the Department of Highways attesting to the fact that </p> <p>Jordan Nelson discoverd the Pocahontas coal seam.</p> <p></p> <p>In 1885, after suffering theloss of his wife and two of his sons within </p> <p>a period of four months, Jordan sold his property in Tazwell County and </p> <p>moved back to West Virginina, where he spent the remainder of his life </p> <p>among his children. information out of Boone County, History Book and </p> <p>submitted by: Lenore Ferrell</p> <p></p>
