Smallholding resident in Mpumalanga killed Witbank. Police are scratching their heads over the motive for the murder of a smallholder after a burglary at his house, but none of his firearms were stolen from his open safe.

The body of Jose Capazorio (47) was discovered by the police at around 09:00 yesterday morning at the main gate of his rental house on the Grootvlei holding in Verena, Witbank.

According to Capt. Leonard Hlathi, spokesperson for the police's organized crime unit, said Capazorio was hit on the head with a blunt object. His body was partially covered with bricks from the fence wall of his house. Police suspect Capazorio was attacked by the robbers at the gate and killed there. "When they later drove away in his Ford Ranger bakkie, they probably crashed into the wall which caused it to fall over and end up on top of him," said Hlathi. "The safe in his house was open, but none of the three firearms in it, were stolen."
