Most archives note Josef's place of birth as "Tarnopol" (Ternopil)l, Galicia. And also state his position as "Cantor". The name "Chaim Ber Zipper" is sometimes attributed to him.

Music and the Holocaust: Zipper, Herbert http://holocaustmusic.ort.org/places/camps/music-early-camps/dachau...
"With a career that took him from Europe through the Philippines to the USA, the composer and conductor Herbert Zipper had a remarkable and international musical life. Born in Vienna in 1904 to an assimilated Jewish family, Zipper had a happy and comfortable childhood. His father was the son of a cantor, and his mother the daughter of a rabbi. Nonetheless his parents raised him and his siblings in a largely secular environment – like so many of their counterparts, they identified more as Viennese than as Jews. Zipper’s parents were great music lovers, and the children received an extensive musical education."

According to Erich ZIPPER's daughter Lorraine B.:
" ... (Grandfather) Julius ZIPPER was possibly the oldest son of eleven children, from three marriages of Cantor ??? ZIPPER (originally from Galicia) who died in Vienna about 1881. We think Julius may have been the only child of the first marriage and his Mother (name unknown) died at a young age. According to a letter dated 6.9.1993 from the late Dr. Herbert ZIPPER to Dad's first cousin, Cantor ZIPPER's second marriage was to Fanny SCHWARZENBERG, 1838-1927, the daughter of a prominent Hungarian Rabbi..."
