Gen Andrews was a native and long a conspicuous citizen of Salem, whence he removed to Boston within a few years. His military title was derived from the office of Brigadier General in the militia, which he held for several years previous to the organization made necessary by the war of the rebellion. He was commander at Fort Warren, and had charge of all the State troops sent to that station prior to their departure for the seat of war and until it ceased to be used for those purposes. Gen. Andrews had also been repeatedly elected to the office of Mayor of Salem. He was a man of vigorous, active, well informed mind quick in apprehension and retentive of acquirement, of a kindly, most genial and sympathetic disposition, faithful to the utmost, to every duty devolving on him. In every relation of life, recognizing the claims of household and kindred with entire unselfishness. His death will be greatly lamented, and is a public loss. He leaves a widow and five children.
