About Joseph Bailey

Joseph Bailey, who was undoubedly a descendant of Richard Bailey, previously mentioned as an emigrant from England, was born in Rowley, Massachusetts on Feb. 28, 1772. He cam to Washington, New Hampshire near the commencement of the present century and resided for a while at East Washington, in a house which stood in what is now Mason H. Carr's mill yard. He also lived on the border of Hillsborough, where Mrs. D.P. Jones now resides. (Town History published 1886).

The last few years of his life were spent with his daughter, Mrs. George W. Cheney (see dau. Hannah), of East Washington. His first wife was RHODA PEARSONS (or Parsons), whom he married Jan. 17, 1794. She died July 14, 1814 and he ws again married to Mrs. ANNA RAND, who d. in Hillsborough, Dec. 17, 1842. Joseph Bailey d. in Washington on Feb. 14, 1862. His children, most of whom settled in the West and South were:

Children (by Rhoda): Samuel (11/27/1704),Daniel M. (12/11/1796), Nathaniel (3/31/1799), James (8/13/1801), David (6/10/1803), Hannah (7/5/1805; m. Geo. W. Cheney, of W., where they afterward resided; she d. 12/30/1873), Betsey (1/6/1808; d. in Hillsborough), and Mary (2/18/1811).

Children (by Anna): Josiah G. (6/18/1815; m. Catharine Barnes of Hillsborough in 1838; res. in Hillsborough some years, but now res. in Delavan, Ill. His children were: Jerome B., b. Hillsborough 1839), Henry A. (b. Hillsborough, 1842), Emma J. (b. Hillsborough 1847), and Jennie G. (b. Atlanta, Ill 1864).

and Ann R. (b 5/11/1817; m. ----Brown, and for her second husband, Lucius Case; res. in Lincoln, Neb.

NOTE: It should be noted that Anna (Gordon) Rand Bailey had 10 children by her 1st husband.

  • 1794 marriage certif: Joseph Bailey m. Rhoda Parsons (Persons) on 2/13/1794 in Deerfield, NH.
  • 1850 census: Joseph Bailey (78, b Mass); in Washington NH at home of son Josiah G. Bailey (34, b NH), his wife Catharine Bailey (29, b NH) and children Jerome (11), Henry (8) and Emily (5). Also there is farm hand Calvin Centice (15). Both he and son Josiah are farmers.

Note: I have no doubt that he married twice....but the son of 2nd wife Anna was born PRIOR to dau. of 1st wife Rhoda.....which is not possible....memorial manager is not available.
