"Joseph Ball, was born in Jamaica, and was of one-half or one-quarter African descent. He seems to have been the descendant of British nobility and one of their slaves. After moving to Boston about 1790, Joseph Ball Sr. helped found the African Society there in 1796. About two years later the couple married. His wife, Mary Montgomery Ball was white, the daughter of Charles and Mary Drew."
