About Joseph Baly

In the canon law of the Catholic Church, ecclesiastical privileges are the privileges enjoyed by the clergy. Their scope varied over time.

The main privileges are:

Privilegium canonis, regarding personal inviolability against malicious injury
Privilegium fori, regarding a special tribunal in civil and criminal causes before an ecclesiastical judge.
Privilegium immunitatis, exemption from taxation and some other burdens
Privilegium competentiae, right to proper sustenance
In addition to personal privileges, ecclesiastical privileges may cover consecrated and sacred places and things.

Joseph Baly (1824–1909)[1] was Archdeacon of Calcutta[2] from 1872[3] until 1883;[4]

Baly was educated at Worcester College, Oxford,[5] graduating BA in 1846[6] and M.A. in 1857.[7] He was ordained deacon in 1847[8] and priest in 1848.[9] He served curacies in Leicester and Falmouth.[10] In 1854 he became Warden of St Thomas's College, Colombo.[11] He later served as Chaplain at Allahabad, Sealkote and Simla before returning to Falmouth as its Rector (1870[12]–1872).[13] He was appointed a Fellow of the University of Calcutta in 1879. On his return from India he was Chaplain of Windsor Great Park from 1885[14] until 1906.[15]

He died on 6 November 1909.

His daughter Amelia Baly was the wife of Field Marshal Sir George White.

The archdeacon of Calcutta was a senior ecclesiastical officer within the Anglican Diocese of Calcutta, and dates back to the early 19th century. As such he was responsible for the disciplinary supervision of the clergy within his part of the diocese. It is now the Church of North India Diocese of Calcutta.
