Joseph Benezette Barton, son of Enos Ozias Barton and Obedience Goforth, was born in Knox Co., Illinois on Nov. 10, 1878. He married to widow CLARA MAUDE (White) ROOTS in 1912. She was born Aug. 21, 1876 in Reno Co., Kansas. She died in Dec. 29, 1927 in Pretty Prairie, Reno Co., Kansas, and in 1929 he married 2nd with Hannah ELIZABETH (White) WEST (widowed sister of his first wife). Both wives daus. of Ephraim White and Sarah Summerfield. He died Jan. 19, 1957 in Pretty Prairie, Reno Co., Kansas; Hannah died Nov. 1, 1966 in Kingman Co., Kansas. He is buried at Lone Star Cemetery, Pretty Prairie, Reno Co., Kansas; Hannah is buried at Fairview Cemetery, Elmer, Reno Co., Kansas.

Clara Maude is buried at Lone Star Cemetery, Pretty Prairie, Reno Co., Kansas. Hannah is buried at Fairview Cemetery, Elmer, Reno Co., Kansas. Joseph is buried at Lone Star Cemetery, Pretty Prairie, Reno Co., Kansas.

Children (all by Clara) were: Lawrence M. (1913-1991), Ethel Lucille (1915-2004; m. Wingate), and Viola Evelyn (1918-2011; m. Waltner, m. Kukla).

OBIT: J.B. Barton, 78, retired rural mail carrier, died at his home in Pretty Prairie Saturday afternoon, Jan. 19th.

Mr. Barton was born at Galesburg, Ilinois, Nov. 10, 1878, a son of Mr. & Mrs. Enos O. Barton. The family came to Kansas and settled in Logan County. Mr. Barton came to Pretty Prairie in 1900 and was one of the first mail carriers when the rural route was established. He was carrier 30 years before retirement.

He was married to Clara Maude Roots in 1912. She died in 1927 and in 1929 he married the second time to Elizabeth West.

Funeral services will be held at 2 0'clock this (Tuesday) afternoon in the Methodist church at Pretty Prairie, conducted by Rev. Everett Vaughn of Bucklin, former pastor at Pretty Prairier, assisted by Rev. Leonard Knox of Pretty Prairie. Burial will be in the Lone Star Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Larence Barton of Cleveland; two daughters, Mrs. Tom Wingate of Varner and Mrs. Marvin Waltner of Garden City; two step-sons, Charles Roots of Langdon and Clarence Roots of Hutchinson; five brothers, Dave of Pretty Prairie, Earl of Garden City, Ray of Wichita, Fred of Russell and Ellis of Hutchinson; two sisters, Mrs. Dela Harrison of Hooker, Okla., and May Smith of Kelso, Wash., and fifteen grandchildren.
