About Joseph Edwin Barton

The Giltner Gazette - Giltner, Nebraska - 25 Apr 1940, Thu
STROKE IS FATAL TO JOSEPH E BARTON
Funeral This Afternoon at Methodist Church with Burial at Chappell
Joseph Edward Barton was born April 7, 1870 at Eagleville, Missouri and passed away at the home of his daughter Mrs. T. L. Smith, in Giltner April 24, 1940 at the age of 70 years and 17 days.
He was united in marriage February 17, 1894 to Amelia Grimm at Alexandria, Nebraska. To this union five children were born, one daughter, Nellie, passing away at the age of 4. This union was broken October 11, 1938 by the death of Mrs. Barton. He spent his early years in Mason county, Illinois coming to Alexandria Nebraska in 1893.
He united with the church in his youth and continued in loyal fellowship throughout the years. In 1910 he moved to Chappell, Nebraska where he continued farming operations until 1937, when he retired and came to Giltner. Since the death of his wife he had made his home with his daughter Mrs. Smith. Mr. Barton was of a friendly disposition and was always ready to express that friendship in a practical way. His first thought was always for his family. He was indeed a wonderful husband and father. He had been in ill health for the past two years although much of the time he was up around. His death came quite unexpectedly as the result of a heart attack.
He is survived by his mother Mrs. Phoebe Barton of Forest City, Illinois, three daughters, Mrs. Flossie Lovell of Chappell, Nebraska, Mrs. Phoebe Lovell and Mrs. Mabel Smith of Giltner, one son, Lewis, of Big Springs, Nebraska and one brother Frank, of Forest City, Illinois, also ten grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services are being held this afternoon at the Giltner Methodist church with Rev E N Littrell in charge and the body will be taken to Chappell for burial.
