Joseph Beeden/Beedem

  • Born in Dublin on 21 September 1833.
  • Entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on H.M.S. Fly on 22 November 1847
  • Advanced to Boy 1st Class in February 1850.
  • H.M.S. Britannia, January 1852-March 1855
  • Served in the Baltic
  • Promoted to Ordinary Seaman in January 1852
  • Able Seaman in August 1852.
  • Served on H.M.S. Duke of Wellington, March 1855-April 1857
  • Served in Crimean War
  • Promoted to Leading Seaman in December 1856
  • Coxswain of the Cutter in February 1857.
  • January 1857 whilst serving on H.M.S. Duke of Wellington, he performed the first of his rescues for which he was awarded the Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal.
  • Served on H.M.S. Cumberland, becoming Captain of the Mizzen Top in April 1857 and Boatswain’s Mate in November the same year.
  • July 1857 he performed his second rescue - awarded the Royal Humane Society Silver Medal.
  • Boatswain in December 1860
  • Received a Silver Clasp to his Royal Humane Society Medal in Silver for rescue performed in March 1872 while serving on H.M.S. Malabar.
  • Boatswain Joseph Beeden served on H.M.S. Malabar when he was discharged ill to Haslar Hospital and died of disease on 24 June 1881.

Served in the Baltic campaign and in the Crimea 1854-56.
