Joseph Ratcliff Boone
Joseph Ratcliff Boone was born about 1815 in Pickens County, South Carolina.
His parents were Tyra Boone and Mary Alexander. The Boone family came
down through Virginia to Surry County, North Carolina. The Alexander family
did the same thing but settled a couple of counties over to the east in
Rockingham County, North Carolina. Both families lived there for some time
and then moved down into South Carolina. Again, both families settled in
Pendleton District, South Carolina in the part that later became Pickens County,
South Carolina. Their choice of settling this time was along the upper part of
the Keowee River.
Tyra and Mary were married there in Pickens County in about 1814. Their first
child was Joseph Ratcliff Boone. There were five more children to follow:
Daniel, Lucinda, Warren, Artamissa and Mikajah. After the children were all
born there in Pickens County, South Carolina, Tyra and Mary moved west to
Cherokee County, Georgia. I estimate the time being about 1835 when Joseph
Ratcliff Boone had married Sarah Hudson in that year. Joseph and Sarah had six
children themselves, all born in Cherokee County, Georgia.
In 1853 there was a letter drawn by Mary's brother Micajah Alexander and
gave him permission by Tyra Boone to sell his land holdings in Pickens, South
Carolina and forward the proceeds to Joseph who looked to relocate in
Alabama. This letter was recorded in 1858.
We find that Tyra Boone and Mary Alexander Boone both died in Summit,
Blount County, Alabama. Their children followed them to Alabama all except
Joseph Ratcliff Boone. He moved back to Pickens County, South Carolina to be
near Sarah's parents, John Hudson and Nancy Stewart. They had owned land
near Pumpkin Town, Pickens County for many years.
The reason I am writing all of this is to correct an error made by the family
historians, which listed Joseph Ratcliff being the son of Ratcliff Boone and
Margaret Reece. I believe this to be untrue.
1. Ratcliff and Margaret did not get married until 1820 and the 1850 US
Census list Joseph Ratcliff was born 1815.

2. Ratcliff and Margaret had a son, Joseph Reece Boone born 1831 and I
believe people mixed the two boys. There are many documents stating
J.R. Boone signed this or communicated etc. Over time somehow
someone attached Joseph Ratcliff Boone to Ratcliff and Margaret and that
is incorrect.
3. I do believe since Tyra Boone and Mary Alexander Boone moved to
Alabama and died shortly after they were there, Ratcliff and Margaret
became the elders for Joseph Ratcliff Boone and Sarah Hudson.
4. Although Ratcliff Boone was the uncle to Joseph Ratcliff Boone, he was
considered his father.
5. In about 1860 Joseph Ratcliff Boone disappeared while going on a buying
trip for the Palmours. In just a little different way of looking at all of this,
I think Joseph Ratcliff may have tried to go to Alabama to see his folks,
but was killed on the way.
Virginia Tillery Perigo

Family Bible lists him as Joseph Ratcliff Boone. Ratcliff was a family name given to the boys in his family.
He married Sarah Hudson about 1835

According to the 1850 Census Joseph Ratcliff Boone worked as a carpenter. It lists him as Ratcliffe Boone. It was not uncommon for them to spell names the way they sound.
