He married Elizabeth Johnson, daughter of Joseph Johnson, who gave consent, in Washington County, Kentucky. The witnesses to the bride's father's consent were John Johnson, John Bolds, and John B. McLean. John Bolds swore the groom was of age. The minister at this wedding on November 24, 1816 was Rev. Father Thomas Wilson, O.P.

Joseph and Elizabeth (Johnson) Bowles were the parents of at least: Elizabeth Bowles, Hullett Bowles, Kitty Bowles, Hethelder Bowles, Cynthia Ann Bowles, George Washington Bowles 1823-1899, and Teresa Bowles, 1832-xxxx.
