About Joseph Brown
Joseph Brown, born 07/27/1813, or as one family member has the records, 6-26-1813, son of Mercer and Mary (Smith) Brown married Elizabeth Cook(e), born 10/25/1812, in the Elwood Meeting on 11/6/1833. They lived near Bethel, and our Grandmother Keziah was raised there. Joseph Brown died on 12/15/1845, leaving his widow with six small children to raise, the twins being just a few months old. Their son Eli, predeceased Joseph. Joseph Brown is buried in the old Hopewell Cemetery and his stone is still legible. The 1850 US Federal Census for Vermilion County, Illinois shows them living right next to Granville and John PUGH. Mercer was 16 and the man of the house and Keziah was 13, Mary 10; Thomas 8; and the twins 6. It show Elizabeth was born in MD.
Acres: 4000
Joseph Brown died intestate December 15, 1845. Nathan Thornton was appointed administrator; security Zimri and Wright Cook. Estimated value of estate $1,000.00
When Grace Canaday "read" the cemetery in 1979 she was able to find his stone and still read it. I couldn't find it on my trip in 2008* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jan 10 2024, 23:03:45 UTC
