DR JOS A BRUMLEVE - PASSED AWAY FRIDAY AFTER AN ILLNESS OF A YEAR
Was One of Our Best Known and Respected Citizens - Funeral Took Place Tuesday Morning
Dr Joseph A Brumleve died at Home in Teutopolis Friday after an illness which has kept him more or less confined for the past year. While his death was not unlooked for among his friends he having frequently told them he knew his illness was incurable, nevertheless the news is received with much sorrow by them. The deceased had a wide acquaintance made during his 35 years of practice in this community. He had a nature that made friends for him with ease. He never interfered with anyones business and while a man of pronounced views, he always was courteous and gave each the right to his own opinion on all public questions. The community has lost a good citizen in his death.
Joseph A Brumleve was born in Teutopolis on July 4, 1852. He was a son of Clemens and Francisca Brumleve, pioneers. His entire education was received at St Joseph's College from which institution he graduated. He then went to Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, USA and entered the Ohio Medical College and graduated from there in 1872, when but 20 years of age. He then entered into partnership with Dr William at Effingham and remained there one year, after which he came here and has practised here since. Some years ago, his son, Dr L A formed a partnership with him which continued until about five years ago when he retired from the practice of medicine. He died of uric acid deathesis.
The deceased was married to Christina Schumacher 33 years ago and to the union eight children were born, one dead and the following living, Dr Lawrence, Frank, Louis ,Edward, Mrs John (Emma) Hackman, Lena and Frances. Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn the following brothers and sister; Rev Fr August, John, Alexander, Henry, Frank and Mrs Philomena Rau.
The funeral took place Tuesday from the Catholic Church. Rev August Brumleve reading the mass. The services were attendee by a large concourse of relatives and friends who gathered to pay their last respects to his memory.
