Joseph Bulkeley, son of Thomas and Sarah Jones Bulkeley, born 1644, married Martha Beers of Fairfield. The Fairfield Records show that he was a large land-holder, as was his brother John. The following are some of the entries: — Feb. 15, 1672, Joseph Bulkeley hath received three parcels of land due to. him, as his portion of his mother, Sarah Wilson, to be to him and his heirs forever.
The lands are as followeth: —
One home lot, being in quantity two and a half acres, being more or less bounded on the south-east with the land of John Bulkeley, on the south-west with the highway, on the north-west with the lands of his mother Wilson, on the north-east with the land of (Henrich ?) and George Squire, so much of the orchard as falls to his lot. Also a third part of her meadow before the house, being in quantity more or less bounded on the north-east with the land of his mother Wilson, on the south-west with the lands of George Squire, on the north-west with the highway, on the south-east with the sea- board. Also a third part of the meadow in the Middle Meadow, being in quantity two acres, being more or less bounded on the north-east with the land of his said mother, on the south-east with the Creek, on the south-west with the land of George Squire, on the north-east with the highway. Also a parcel of land in Sascoe field, being in quantity one acre and a half, more or less, bounded on the south-west with the land of Thomas Bennet, on the south- east with a highway, on the north-east with the salt marsh, on the north-west with the land of said Sarah, his mother. Also one parcell of meadow in Sascoe north, being in quantity half an acre- more or less, bounded ye north-east with a highway, on the south- east with the land of Joshua Knowles, on the south-west with the land sometime pertaining to George Godwin, deceased, on the north-east with the land of Thomas Beers. The first parcel above mentioned, viz., ye home lot, was given to Mr. Thomas Bulkeley, deceased, by the last Will and Testament of his brother, Daniell Bulkeley, deceased. There appears also on the Records an agree- ment between John and Joseph Bulkeley in regard to property left by their mother, Sarah Wilson, Oct. 29, 1688.

The will of Sarah Wilson, “sometimes Sarah Bulkley,” dated 26 Apr 1677, codicil 15 Feb 1680, proved 2 Jan 1683, mentions daughter Sarah wife of Eliazer Browne of New Haven, daughter Rebecca wife of Joseph Whelplie of Fairfield, daughter Hannah, sisterin-law Mr. Eliphalet Jones’ wife, sister Elizabeth Hill, two sons John and Joseph Bulkley. Brother-in-law Mr Gershom Bulkeley of Wethersfield and Samuel Wakeman, overseers. Witnesses, Gershom Bulkley and Israell Chancy.6
