Joseph Callaway's Obituary Pre-1853 Virginia vital statistics are rare. The following obituary is from Religious Herald, 25 January 1839, p.15. "Departed this life, at his residence in Campbell Co., on the 6th ult. [i.e., 6 December 1838], brother Joseph Calloway at the advanced age of 88 years. He was a soldier of the Revolutionary War . . . ." This article was submitted to the Herald by Samuel Davidson, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church from 1837 to 1852, and was reprinted in the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, vol. 34, no. 3. On inserted leaves stitched into the binding: Joseph Callaway was born September 20, 1751, deceased November 29, 1838 Mary Callaway, wife of J. Served in the Bedford and Campbell Co. Militia in Rev. War. He was a Revolutionary Soldier. He (like his father) served as the county lieutenant for the Bedord County Militia.
