According to the text "Journey to Zion, Voices from the Mormon Trail" by Carol Cornwall Madsen, Deseret Book Company, Salt Lake City, Utah 1997 (pages 491-492)....."-Got safe up the creek.as Sister Chambers came up her Son told us his Father was dead!-He had been ill a long time They asked me to go & look at him which I did He looked like a statue so thin & wasted-Death is ever aweful! and it made me feel low & triste at last they all came up & got safely over-we then went to Sister C. and asked her if we could do anything for her-she gave me some domestic to make a shroud or wrapper for the corpse-which I did. then sent her some wine-for herself and the women who laid him out-dined &Br Spencer decided he would not go on till to morrow so we prepared to wash some clothing- at 1/4 to 3 the grave was completed &Br Spencer told us he wished to attend the funeral of Br Chambers to the grave-We did it so -it was a nice dug grave They laid leaves at the bottom & then lowered the Corpse into it some boughs over him & then was filled up Br Samuel assisted all thro' Br Neslen made ahead board-on which was "Joseph Chambers-Native of England aged 53-Anno53-We can only say "Resquiescat" "From the diary of Hannah Dorcas Tapfield King in the Company led by Claudius V. Spencer.
