Biography

Joseph Chase Sr. was born on February 26, 1689 in Tisbury, Dukes, Massachusetts to Lt. Isaac Chase and Mary Tilton. At the time of his birth, Tisbury was a part of New York state. [1][2] Joseph was the seventh child and fifth son born to Isaac and Mary.

On July 26, 1714, Joseph married Lydia Coffin in Nantucket. [3]. [4] The couple had ten children together: Abel, Mary, Damaris, Lydia, Priscilla, Rachel, Sarah, Benjamin, Joseph Jr., and Thomas. [2] According to Banks, Joseph was a hatter. He and Lydia lived out their lives in Edgartown. Joseph owned a lot on the harbor front in Edgartown, one of the "five and twenty" south of Main Street."[2]

Joseph died on May 1, 1749 in Edgartown at the age of 60. He is buried in the Tower Hill Cemetery in Edgartown, alongside his wife, Lydia. [2][5]
