  • Cross of St George
  • Joseph Cooke was born in England.
  • Puritan Great Migration
  • Joseph Cooke immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640 and later departed for Stanway, Essex, England.

Joseph Cooke,[1][2] gentleman, of Pebmarsh, Essex, son of Thomas Cooke, gentleman, of Great Yeldham, Essex, was born about 1608 based on ages reported in later years. He was born in Earls Colne, Essex, England; siblings included Thomas and George and Grace.

"Through their aunt, Elizabeth Cooke, who married Edmund Reade, Joseph and George Cooke were related to several other New England immigrants, including John Winthrop Jr., Thomas Reade, Margaret (Reade) Lake, Martha (Reade) (Epes) Symonds and Rev. Hugh Peter."[3] Joseph Cooke emigrated to New England in 1635, traveling on the HMS Defence with his younger brother George Cooke. He was listed as one of the "servants to... Roger Harlakenden." They apparently traveled in disguise instead of as Gentlemen due to being "proscribed" for their Puritanical religious beliefs.[4]

Joseph settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was made a Freeman one year after his arrival; that would not have happened for a servant who had 7 years to work off his passage. He then served as town clerk, commissioner, and deputy to the General Court.

In 1639, he made as attorneys "my well beloved & dear brother Thomas Cooke of Wormingford in the said County of Essex, gent., and my well beloved friend Ricahrd Herlakenden of Earles Colne in the said County, Esquire,... to enter on all those my freehold & copyhold lands & tenements called Brysett Kell..." that were bequeathed to him by his father, whose Will was proven February 8, 1639.[5]

In 1640, identifying himself as second son of Thomas Cooke, late of Great Yealdham, Essex, quit-claimed to his older brother Thomas, rights to land he owned in Brysett Magna, Suffolk.

In 1642 he married Elizabeth Haynes, who was still alive as late as January 1659, after which they returned to England, where in 1665, he was living at Stanway, Essex, England. He left his land in Cambridge, MA to his oldest son, Joseph Cooke.

He received a legacy from the estate of his brother Thomas Cooke, of Pebmarsh, Essex in 1682 (Will written Sept. 17, 1689, proven March 1682).

Joseph Cooke died shortly before 19 May 1699, when the administration of his estate was granted to his son Thomas.

Anderson says he died "after 1679 when he was mentioned in his brother's will."

Research Note

Susan Hardman Moore in "Abandoning America..." identifies Joseph Cooke as "...the COUSIN of George Cooke" not brother.[6] FSFTID MN5Q-7SY.

Buried 7 SEP 1639. Old Warden, Beds, Eng.

"Richard Singletary married for his second wife (Goodwife Singletary having died in 1638/9} Susannah Cooke,..." who was the mother of his 7 children.

Susannah was the sister of Phillip Cooke of Cambridge MA, who "was a proprietor at Cambridge 1646: freeman, May 26 1647, and when he died he left a will dated 18 Jul 1666; probated 2 Apr 1667; wife Mary; Samuel, eldest son; "children to be placed in family of friends and relatives if his wife approved." (Monnette's Reference: Paige’s History of Cambridge [MA], p. 514) Children: John, age 3 to sister Singletary of Haverhill; Phillip, age 5, to Richard Eccles; & Hannah, age 9 to John Cooper. He wanted his children "to be brought up in Christian nurture and honest employment."

Monnette stated that upon checking records, etc. at Cambridge, MA, that Joseph Cooke at Cambridge was an older brother of "Col. George Cooke, Gent., Freeman, March 3, 1635-6...", a Cromwellian soldier. According to other indications, Monnette states that Phillip Cooke was also brother of the above George and Joseph, who came to America together, and they are believed to have been related to Susannah (Cooke) Singletary. "An/d probably from his actual service, and as a Colonel in Oliver Cromwell’s army, gave the tradition to Thomas Bloomfield, through the Daughter Mary who became the wife of Jonathan Dunham", s/o Richard Singletary.
