About Joseph Emory Davis

Served in Mississippi Dragoons in the War of 1812. Joseph was a lawyer, bor near Atlanta GA (half way between Jonesborough and Decatur on railway, present day Hopeville) in Fayette County. In 1776 he moved with his father to KY. He was placed in mercantile house at an early age. He studied law at Russelville and in Wilkinson Co. Mississippi whether accompanied his father in 1811; admitted to bar in 1812, practiced in Greenville MS. Deligate from Jefferson Co. in 1817 to convention that organized Miss state government. In 1820-27, in Natchez, in co-partnership with Thomas B. Beed. In 1827 he retired to plantation on Mississippi River. During the Civil War he was driven from his home. He returned to Vicksburg at close of was and regained possission of his estate after a controversy with the officers of the Freedman's Bureau.
