Son of John Frederick Nicholas Daynes and Eliza Miller. He was the first Mormon Tabernacle organist appointed by Brigham Young at the age of 16. He served as organist at the Tabernacle from 1867 - 1900. He wrote the hymn "As the Dew from Heaven Distilling" which is the closing selection on all of the Mormon Taberncale Choir's radio broadcasts.
