

No doubt it was conscription that caused Joseph, a married man with three children, to join the army at the age of 34. His record shows that his next of kin was Theresa Gilston (Nee McLoughlin, a spinster when she was married). He had three children; Oswald born 21st July 1913, Philip born 5th November 1914 and Margaret Mary born 5th December 1915.4 inches tall, had a 34 inch chest (38 inches when expanded) and had a slight flat left foot.
