No doubt it was conscription that caused Joseph, a married man with three children, to join the army at the age of 34. His record shows that his next of kin was Theresa Gilston (Nee McLoughlin, a spinster when she was married). He had three children; Oswald born 21st July 1913, Philip born 5th November 1914 and Margaret Mary born 5th December 1915.4 inches tall, had a 34 inch chest (38 inches when expanded) and had a slight flat left foot. So, he was probably shorter than any of his sons being two inches shorter than his second son, my father, Philip.s medical passed him a1 fit for general service and he was posted as a Private to the 4th Border Regiment at Carlisle.e was posted to join the 9th Brigade, British Expeditionary Force, in Salonika arriving there on 19th January 1918. At the time of his conscription Theresa was about four months pregnant and she gave birth to Elizabeth on 15th January 1918 four days before he arrived in Salonika.hener Military Hospital, Brighton, Sussex where he stayed until his transfer on 9th September 1919 when he went on leave until 29th September 1919 and then on to Fulwood Barracks, Preston. His discharge from hospital stated that he was fit for employment.s Z Army Reserve.
