Mariners and ships in Australian Waters
RAINBOW OF SYDNEY, WILLIAM ORR, MASTER, BURTHEN 75 TONS FROM THE PORT OF WELLINGTON TO SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, 9th JUNE 1862
Surname Given name Station Age Of what Nation Status ..
GOOCH J B A. B. 30 LONDON CREW

The Rainbow was a ship built approx Dec 1860 (details from a paperspast news article dated March 1862) Was used as a tug and Ferry between Taieri and Dunedin carrying wool etc. Sometimes went north to Coromandel,

The ship was advertised for sale in March 1862. Presume new owners had plans for the ship in Australia.

The Rainbow did a journey up the Taieri river to Lake Waipora. This suggests the ship must have been quite small and shallow in the water.

Correction: There may have been two ships named Rainbow. A foreign ship named Rainbow, a whaler, arrived in Auckland March 12 1862. 475 tons capacity sounds like a large ship, Carrying a quantity of whale oil "from the whaling grounds".

Definitely two ships. The Taieri Rainbow was only 75 tons

But see that the weight of the lighter ship matches the ship to Sydney.

Another obscure and incomplete remark. I couldn't trace this back. This appeared on Google. "...1860, in an occasional messy but legible hand, largely containing weather, wind and progress of passage, naming Joseph Bright Gooch as a gentleman passenger..."
