About Joseph Haley

From Saco Valley Settlements and Families, Blacksmith, did all the iron work for the settlers for many years. Was a soldier for four years in the French and Indian War and four years in the Revolutionary War. Of Kittery, later settled at Deerwander in Hollis, Maine. He came to the plantation of Little Falls in 1795, and settled in that part then known as "Deerwander," where he cleared the farm now occupied by his grandson, John M. Haley. (Property now occupied by a new residence Jan. 11, 1992. John M. Haley and others buried on private property on Deerwander Road, Hollis.)

Joseph moved to Brunswick and settled on a "fifty Acre lot" which was conveyed to proprietors 5 Aug. 1768 near the old yellow Baptist meeting house which was built by him. He signed a remonstrance with other fathers of the town protesting against unequal taxation for supporting the ministry and for other town charges, 4 May 1768. Joseph was listed in the 1771 tax list as having one house with one adjoining building worth £6, 2 oxen, 1 cow, 1 pig, 1 acre of farm land which produced 9 bushels of grain per year.(1) On 27 May 1800 Mary Haley was appointed administratrix for Joseph's estate with his son Joshua being responsible for posting a notice in the local paper.
