About Joseph F. "Joe" Hammerschmidt
Services for Joseph F. Hammerschmidt, 75, Victoria, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Fidelis Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Fidelis Cemetery with military services by the American Legion of Hays.
Mr. Hammerschmidt died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at the Hays Medical Center-St. Anthony Campus, Hays.
He was born May 15, 1923, near Emmeram, to John J. and Anna Brungardt Hammerschmidt. He graduated from Victoria High School and from St. Benedictine College in 1950. He received his master's degree from Fort Hays State University in 1975. He served with the Fourth Marine Division in World War II. He was a teacher, coach and school administrator and many Kansas schools. He was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and Marine Corps League, both of Hays, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Victoria.
He married Louise Miller on Aug. 25, 1947, in Catherine. She survives of the home. Other survivors include three sons, Don, New Port Ritchey, Fla., Ron,Topeka, and Bob, Victoria; a daughter, Mary Beth Green, Lawrence; three sisters, Mary Schulte, Victoria, Clara Kuhn, Ellis, and Anna Josita Hammerschmidt, Concordia; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
