About Joseph Hanby
Listed in Northampton County taxes, 1782, as owning nearly nothing.
Listed again in 1788 with one horse, no white males between 16 and 21, and no slaves.
Listed in 1803 as owning 3 slaves>16, 2 slaves<16, 4 horses, 2 cattle, and a riding chair - but no land.
Son John "of Joseph" old enough to be taxed in 1811 (must have been born c. 1790). Implication that there was another John Hanby around, with a different father (possibly a William? There were at least three of *them* around between 1782-1811).
Polly Hanby, who married Edmund Bell on 27 December 1802, was explicitly identified as his daughter (and as being under 21).
Peggy Hanby, who married Thomas Edmunds on 3 February 1798, and for whom he stood security, may have been another daughter, or a much younger sister.
According to the will of his second wife Bridget (nee Edmunds, widow of Stringer Melholloms and a Dalby) as of 3 May 1824, he had a grandson William Hanby (possibly the oldest son of John "of Joseph", considering that "John Hanby" was the administrator of Joseph's estate and a witness to Bridget's will), a granddaughter Sally Bell (daughter of Polly Hanby and Edmund Bell), and an unexplained "Susi" Hanby. Other named "grandchildren" of Bridget were John Smith, Susanna Ward, Ann Smith (John's sister?), and Mary Brown - but whether they were Joseph's also is uncertain.
