About Joseph Jenkins

Joseph Jenkins may have been born in 1761; his stone dates his birth 1772. He was a veteran of the American Revolution. Old letters describe him as "a handsome, distinguished man standing six feet four inches in his stocking feet." He was a planter on Edisto Island. Joseph Jenkins was quite active in state politics, representing St. Luke Parish in the 10th SC General Assembly (1792-94). He qualified for the 13th Assembly (1799) by special election. He also served in the 14th (1800-01) and 18th (1808-09) Assemblies. He was electd state Senator (1810-1813) from St. John's, Colleton and served on numerous committees. He was a forceful and eloquent speakaer. Joseph Jenkins was a member of the Episcopal church and a delegate to the Diocesan Convention in 1804. He bought Brick House on Edisto Island in 1791 from the descendants of Paul Hamilton. He also owned lands on the Toogoodoo river and had a residence there. Joseph Jenkins married Elizabeth Evans, daughter of John and Sarah (Fripp) Evans on July 4, 1785 in St. Helena Parish. They had seven children:
