Manawatu district, New Zealand

They arrived in Wellington by the ship Martha Ridgway in 1840, after a six months’ voyage, and from there went for several months into the Manawatu, where Mr Jones was engaged with the first preliminary survey of that district. Here a sister of the late Mr John Jones was born—the first white child born in the Manawatu, afterwards called by the natives "The Queen of Manawatu.” The family came on to Wanganui in 1841, the two children being carried here by the natives,' the few earthly belongings such as the early settlers brought out with them later on coming up by ship from Wellington.
