About Joseph Kregulj
ACCIDENT NO. 13-February 13, 1911 -Joseph Kregulj, No. 4 Calumet.
Joseph Kregulj, an Austrian trammer, met his death on this day at the 50th level of No. 4 shaft, Calumet Br., C.&H. by being struck with the skip while removing the gate piece.
An inquest over his body was held by Justice Fisher and the following witnesses testified:
Peter Gostavic: "I am employed by C.&H. company in No. 4 Calumet. I knew the man who was killed. He was taking out the gate piece when someone rang two bells and the skip came down and struck him. There are ropes attached to the gate piece to remove it, but the ropes were down in the shaft. When the cage is running we put the ropes down in the shaft as it would be dangerous to leave them up. I put the ropes down in the shaft myself for the cage to go by and I forgot to put them back after"
Joseph Mersal: "I was working at No. 4 at the time Kregulj got killed. We had orders to stop the skip for the second dump. We had one dump and then we put the gate-piece in. The skip was right at the gate piece when Kregulj jumped in the shaft to take out the gate-piece. The accident happened between a quarter and half past one."
Verdict: "We find that the said Joseph Kregulj came to his death on February 13, 1911, at the 50th level, No. 4 shaft, Calumet Branch of the Calumet & Hecla Mine, by being struck with the skip while in the act of removing the gate-piece."
