Joseph was a United Empire Loyalist during the American Revolution and served in General Browne's Prince of Wales American Volunteers. He scouted for the British on the Danbury Raid and participated in other campaigns. In that year he was captured by the Rebels, held prisoner and exchanged 1778.
He removed from Long Island NY on the British ship the "Union" in 1783 along with his brother, Captain John Lyon, and their families.
Settled in Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada.
He married his second wife, Sarah Jane Bulkely, in Connecticut in 1770 and she came to Canada with him.
