About Lt. Joseph Edward Maxwell, Jr.

Joseph Maxwell was a graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point. See Cullum's Register #1491 which can be found on line. He graduated in 1850. He was killed in a fight with Jicarilla & Mescalero Apaches by two arrows about 35 miles from Ft. Union near the Mora River. He was first interred at Ft. Union but his remains were moved to Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery in 1891 when Ft. Union was closed. His headstone from Ft. Union Cemetery is located inside the Visitor Center at Ft. Union National Monument, Mora County, New Mexico.
