About Joseph Daniel Powell
According to family members, Joe Powell was accused of stealing cattle, they say that he took the blame for a friend, but he AND his friend J. D. Pennington, were arrested in Live Oak County, Texas, and sent to jail for 6 months. He was never heard from again. That should have been around 1933 not long before Luther was born. Where, WHERE, WHERE is Joe Powell???
Well, I got papers from the county clerk in Live Oak County the other day, which is where Joe went to jail and court. He was living in Uvalde at the time he was arrested, so the cost to the plaintiff for the arrest was more than the cost of the cow (yes, only ONE cow) that was taken.. These papers say that the charges against him were dismissed because the plaintiff refused to testify. There was only ONE cow that was stolen. The times being what they were, they probably took it to feed their kids. J.D. Pennington was also charged. I don't know what happened with him since I only asked for Joe's papers.
According to his youngest son, Joe's wife always said that Joe died in about 1933. I can't find any sort of documentation on that. I do know that he didn't go home and went bumming (according to the youngest son) around the state, and maybe down to Bolivia to see his parents and siblings. Nobody knows when or where he died or where he might be buried. There are lots of stories floating around his children from his second marriage.
