Joseph Price BIRTH 6 Dec 1849 Germany DEATH 13 Nov 1911 (aged 61)

Son of Melure "Michael" Price, 1823-1880, & Catherine Unknown, 1816-1895.

Mr. Joseph Price, a pioneer citizen of Palatka and one of the most ... men in East Florida, has crossed the "Great Divide." The death came quietly and peacefully on Monday afternoon at his home in the North End, following an illness of extended duration. For months past he had suffered more or less with kidney complaint, but with that energy and determination ever characteristic of the true man, he retained his business connections and was daily at his post of duty in Gay Brothers' store. Last week he was stricken with hemorrhagic fever, and his condition steadily became more alarming until Monday afternoon at about 4 o'clock, his spirit took its flight. The news of his death spread rapidly and was everywhere received with expressions of sincere regret, for his friends and acquaintances were many, not only in the city, but throughout the county and circuit, and he was held in high esteem by all.

Mr. Price had long been prominent in the business and political life of Putnam county. Descending from a family of prominence, he was practically reared in an atmosphere of politics, and at an early age he was found battling in the ranks of Democracy, and in ... became a leader of the party for the county, being for many years chairman of the executive committee, and always gave liberally of his time and finances for the advancement of the interests of the party. After serving a while as deputy clerk he was made clerk of the county, a position of responsibility for four terms. After vacating public office he accepted the position of bookkeeper for Gay Brothers and this place he held until stricken down in his last illness. Mr. Price was a big-hearted, liberal-minded gentleman, who was ever loyal to his friends. He was an indulgent parent, his devotion to his family being probverbial and his home life ... in private and in public life ... the respect and confidence ... general community ... years of usefulness and ... now that he has gone to his rest and reward all realize that the county has lost one of its ... and best citizens.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Arthur B. Curtis, and two sons, Raymond R. and Joseph Price.

The funeral was held from St. Monica's Catholic Church Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Father Barry officiated. The interment was in West View Cemetery. The large concourse of sorrowing friends attending attested to the high esteem in which he was held. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful, special designs being contributed by Patton Anderson Chapter U.D.C., and by employees and members of the firm of Gay Brothers. The following gentlemen acted as pallbearers: Messrs, E. S. Crill, Leo Jacobson, S. J. Kennerly, S. J. Hilburn, J. H. Haughton and G. E. Gay.

In this their hour of great affliction the grief-stricken relatives have the sincere sympathy of the people of Putnam county. (Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 17 Nov 1911.)
