The date on Joseph's gravestone say 06 March 1832, but several census reports show his birth year from 1823 to 1832. He was born in Pennsylvania to Andrew and Sarah (Bitner) Putman and is the grandson of Peter and Maria(Snyder) Putman of Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.
Joseph married 1st Emeline Gearhart, daughter of Isaac and Ann (Shafer) Gearhart, on 23 Nov 1854 in Van Wert Co., Ohio. Joseph and Emeline had two sons; Andrew Jackson Putman and Andrew Putman. After Andrew was born they migrated to Dent County, Missouri. There is no information about Emeline after 1860. It is assumed that she died.
Joseph married 2nd Margaret C. Frank, of North Carolina, late 1863 or early 1864. They had a son, Charles J. Putman.
Joseph, at age 41, served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was a private in the 63rd Regt. of the Missiouri Militia, Company L under Capt. Myers. Joseph enrolled April 9, 1864 at Rolla, Missouri by Capt. Roberts and ordered into active duty June 7, 1864 at which time he was transferred to Company H. No discharge date is shown.
Joseph was appointed postmaster at Dry Fork, Missouri, Route No. 28521. The location of Dry Fork is someplace between Rolla and Salem. Joseph was listed in the Dent County land records in 1855 and frequently thereafter until his death. He died May 9, 1883 and is buried at the Round Pond Cemetery with his second wife. The church by the cemetery was built in 1885 and is still standing.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Dec 29 2018, 2:17:37 UTC
