About Joseph Rachor

"Between 1849 and 1851 the family immigrated to United States. Bad harvest and emergency were the reasons why many people emigrated from Zellhausen, Hesse, Germany to United States. Between 1846 and 1852 about 120 people only from Zellhausen). The 1848 revolutuion in Germany was the second reason why many people emigrated from Germany (between 1852 and 1854 about 60 people only from Zellhausen). At the time of the American civil war only 5 people emigrated from Zellhausen to United States. In the year 1874 emigrated 15 people from Zellhausen to United States (most of them to their siblings to United States). The economic boom in United States between 1880 and 1888 was another reason why about 65 people from Zellhausen emigrated to United States."

"This family emigrated to Indiana and then moved to Iowa. Iowa was a native american indian territory which was made available to land grant settlement. Iowa is bordered by the Mississippi River which at that time was a source of transport, mills, water power which all means jobs. Joseph worked as a laborer, than a farmer once he obtained land. This family remained a German speaking family, which was common & normal. The story seems typical of the rural (not city) midwest immigrants. This family prospered."
