Biography

JOSEPH REEVE2 was born about 1656, the only one of the four sons of Thomas 1 whose date of birth we know. Both Salmon Records and his gravestone in Southold Churchyard show he died April 22, 1736, age 80. The gravestone has recently been recut and is as good as new.Joseph is referred to 37 times in the Southold land records, more than any other member of the family He first appears in December 1677, when he was 21 years of age, at which time the Town gave him 2 acres of land at the West end of Town on Cow Pond hill A year later the Towngave him an acre at the South end "most convenient for his trade" . In 1680 he acquired 8 additional acres "where Joseph has his shop" . In 1694 Joseph Reeve, blacksmith was one of 4 men who built a windmill at Ralliock's Neck (p215. Case in Volume II, page 530 of the TownRecords located Joseph's house. The location is also shownn a map in Southold's Guide to Historical markers,-1960, p15, which says "This house of Joseph Reeve on the Lower Road has a very old foundation but has undergone radical period changes" (p23).

In the 1686 Census he is shown as having 4 males and 1 female in the family , we believe they consisted of Joseph, his wife Abigail, sons Joseph Jr and Benjamin; the remaining male might have been his brother Jonathan or a son who died before 1698.

1698 Southold Census his family is listed as

  • Joseph Reeve
  • Abigail Reeve
  • Joseph Reeve Jr
  • Benjamin Reeve
  • David Reeve
