Birth: Feb. 13, 1844, Austria Death: Sep. 16, 1920 Milwaukee Milwaukee County Wisconsin, USA
Margaret and Johan Reimer both natives of Semeshitz, Bohemia departed together with her brother, John N. Zwaschka for the United States in 1868. Margaret was then Margaret Reimer, wife of Joseph Reimer, newlywed May 1867, but very pregnant with first born Jake to be born 14 June 1868 in Milwaukee. Margaret is age 22 when they arrive in New York 18 May 1868 on the 3 masted, steam powered ship Hansa and Deutschland from Schlemesitz, Bohemia. In addition to brother-in-law, John N. Zwaschka; they came with Joseph's two unmarried sisters, Elizabeth age 28, described as feeble minded, and Barbara, age 22.
Joseph Reimer farmed in Bohemia with sisters, Barbara and Elizabeth before they emigrated from the port of Bremen, Germany.. After a stop at South Hampton, they encountered fog and headwinds before arriving in New York with 778 total passengers on May 18th 1868. They had left May 6th making it a 16 day voyage. There was a reunion of these families and more on May 30-31, 1997 @Furth -Wald and on a two year cycle. This reunion was attended first by the Groths who did the first genealogical history and subsequently by Mark and Jean Reimer and his Father, Gene and Pearl, and the second time by Mark and Jean and Kathy and Dan Thompson.
Joseph is the son of Johann Reimer (15 Dec. 1804-8 Aug 1860) and Maria SPATZ (7 Feb.1807- 30 Aug 1853)of Semeschitz 29, Bohemia. At this reunion, it was found that most of the surviving Reimer's are female descendants. Many of the male descendants of this generation perished in WWII.
Joseph Reimer purchased the homestead in Ashford from Franz and Margaretha Zwaschka for $500 on 8/20/1872. (recorded in white deeds book #65 Fond du Lac Reg. of Deeds) Foundations of the homestead are all that remain on Willow Lane just north of Ashford. It once included a stately large home, fronted by a long covered porch and a real cement sidewalk and shrubbery. It had an added section, thus there were two stairways to the upstairs, but no hall to adjoin the rooms. Also heated by two separate wood stoves in the kitchen and living room. It was situated on a branch of the Milwaukee River. A creek large enough to provide water for cattle and fish for the catching. The home site was situated at the bottom of a rather large steep stoney Ashford hill. The barn basement was constructed of cement and field stone. Joseph Reimer was said to have been a builder and assisted in the construction of the St. Martin's Ashford school and church. There is a folk tale of Joseph having to pick cement mortar from his beard. Also that their lunch would be hoisted to the high levels of the church construction.
