He was the second child born to John M. and Anna Maria "Emma" nee Brungardt Richmeier, on February 5, 1891 at Herzog, Russia.

He came with my parents to the United States of America by ship when he was nine months old. Arrived in New York in December 1891. From New York we went by train to Victoria (Herzog) Kansas where his mother's uncle Peter had located after leaving Russia in 1875.

He lived in a sod house until April 1892 when he took a job as a section hand at Watkins, Colorado for the Union Pacific Railraoad. After a year and a half he returned to Victoria.

In April 1894 his family moved to Hoganville (St. Peter) in Graham County Kansas. His parents helped to establish the village of Hoganville. They built a sod house on a farm six-and-a-half miles northwest of the village. He attended District Public School from 1898 to 1900. Then he attended St. Anthony's Catholic School in St. Peter.
