Biography

Joseph Rowlandson was born 7 Jan 1661 in Lancaster, Massachusetts. He is the son of Joseph and Mary White Rowlandson. Joseph, not quite 14, was one of the many family members captured in the destruction of the town of Lancaster on 10 Feb 1675/6, when the Rowlandson garrison was burned. He remained in captivity several months, being redeemed between May 12 and July 11, date not given. He was brought in to Maj. Waldron's at Portsmouth, and Onesiphorous Page was sent by his father's sister, the widow Wells of Salisbury; "the gentlemen of the town paid the ransom for him." He then went with his parents to Wethersfield, CT. His parents were the Rev. Joseph Rowlandson and Mary White Rowlandson, who wrote the first 'captivity narrative': "The Sovereignty and Goodness of God" also published in England as "A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson." Her book was the first published by a living woman in the Americas.

During King Philip's War, which was fought partially in Lancaster, a tribe of Indians pillaged the entire town of Lancaster. Their last stop on their trail of destruction was Mary Rowlandson's house. Coming to the defense of the house was Rowlandson's brother in-law who was immediately shot and killed by the attacking Indians. The Indians then set fire to the house, forcing Rowlandson to exit the burning building. Upon crossing the doorstep, Rowlandson saw a scene full of carnage. Her entire family was slaughtered, with the exception of her son, Joseph, her two daughters, Mary and Sarah, and herself. They were kidnapped by the Indians who then took them with them on their travels across New England. The Indians non-fatally shot her in her side. During her captivity, Rowlandson wrote a book called "A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson." The book is widely considered one of the greatest examples of a captivity narrative.
