Joseph Bunford Samuel was born in 1853 and died 1929 in Philadelphia. He married Ellen (1849 - 1913) on May 28 1902, in Philadelphia. They had no issue.
Ellen was the daughter of Jonas Altamont Phillips (1806 - 1862). They were both buried in the Phillips family plot of Mt Sinai Cemetry in Philadelphia.
Joseph was widely known for his interest in art. He was especially interested in a series of twenty sculptures dedicated to American Pioneers, which were to be arranged along a bank of the Schylkill River.
His wife had left $ 500,000 in her will for these statues.
Joseph received the Order of the Falax from King Christian of Denmark.
Joseph was the author of a booklet printed for private circulation (100 copies) in 1912 entitled Records of the Samuel Family.
