About Joseph Sewell
(son of Thomas Sewell, born 1758, and Ann Bacchus, born 1750, both of England). He was born January 2, 1796, Essex, England. Came to Utah in September, 1862.
Married: Sarah Stevens January 10, 1814, Norfolk, England. (daughter of Barnard Stevens and Elizabeth Rivett), who was born April 9, 1797, and died October 16, 1881.
Their children:
Elizabeth born June 13, 1816, married George Wintle;
Sarah born December 19, 1817;
Joseph, Jr. born November 13, 1819, married Emily Ellett January 17, 1841;
Barnard born March 18, 1821.
Family home Woods Cross, Utah.
Left without a father at an early age, he helped to support his mother and a large family, but married at 18 years of age. By insistent economy became the owner of two small sailing vessels, which were used for fishing expeditions. These, with his other belongings, he sold, and with the funds he and his wife came to America to become a part in building up the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which faith they had embraced, having previously been allied with the Presbyterian sect. Immediately after arriving in Salt Lake he located in Davis county, where he lived until March 24, 1880, dying at the age of 84. Sources:
