The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Sewall Smith, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 27 October 1864, while serving with 2d Army Corps, in action at Hatcher's Run, Virginia. Lieutenant Colonel Smith led a part of a brigade, saved two pieces of artillery, captured a flag, and secured a number of prisoners. General Orders: Date of Issue: May 25, 1892
