About Joseph Stockton

Joseph Stockton was Richard Stockton's Uncle. Joseph and Richard's father, John, were brothers.

Richard Stockton was a member of the first graduating class of the College of NJ (now Princeton University).

Richard Stockton initially showed little interest in politics. He once wrote, "The public is generally unthankful, and I never will become a Servant of it, till I am convinced that by neglecting my own affairs I am doing more acceptable Service to God and Man." Stockton did, however, later take an active role as a trustee of the College of New Jersey.

When Joseph STOCKTON was born on May 10, 1697, in New Jersey, his father, Richard "The Builder" Stockton (1665-1709), was 37 and his mother, Susanna (Witham), was 28. He married Elizabeth Doughty on January 2, 1726, in Long Island City, New York. He died on March 15, 1770, in Princeton, New Jersey, at the age of 72.

Joseph Stockton is an Uncle to Richard Stockton "The Signer" of the Declaration of Independence. Richard "The Signers" father, John Stockton (1701-1758), and this Joseph Stockton (1697-1709), are brothers. Joseph & John are sons of Richard "The Builder" Stockton.
