Joseph Stone was the son of William Stone and Elvira Davis of Greenwich, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. In 1850, Joseph was a sawyer in the town of New Salem. He married Lucy Towne on October 13, 1855, according to a family record. By 1870, Joseph and Lucy Stone had a home in Prescott, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, and five children, Joseph, Lucy, Willis, Julia, and Myra. In 1880, Joseph Stone, age 53, was listed in the United States Census with his wife, Lucy, and children, Willis, Julia, Myra, Mabel, and Leon. Joseph Stone was originally interred at Pine Grove Cemetery, Dana, Massachusetts, but his remains were removed to make way for the Quabbin Reservoir. The family erected a new monument in Mountain View Cemetery, New Salem, Massachusetts.
