"Started January 29, 1902, on his 70th birthday - Dr. Joseph Martin Thornhill - Written again on July 21st, 1902 - Poplarville Mississippi.
'Just 70 years ago sometime today I made my advent into this world. Today closes my allotted time. (He meant the 70 years, 3 scores, and ten God has been very merciful to me bringing me to this hour. I did honor my father and my mother "that my days might be long upon the earth". I was born in Pike County, Mississippi, five miles below Thomasville on the east side of Bogue Chitto, and was raised on the various farms we occupied until I was twenty years. I had scarcely any educational opportunities up to that time. Went to school in my eighth year seven months, learned Webster's Speller Bluebook thoroughly, and read the New York Readers No. 1 and No. 2. After then I went to school a month or so a year as opportunities presented themselves. At the age of 19 and 10 months, I went out in the world for myself without money and could read and write a very indifferent hand and could add, subtract, multiply and divide, and solve some of the simplest problems in a single proportion. I knew absolutely nothing of the other branches as now taught in our common schools.
During my first winter's freedom, I split four thousand rails and worked three months in the spring as a farm laborer, for all of which I got fifty-four dollars which paid my board nine months while in school. Went four months from home where my board cost me nothing and one month from a good friend also. Tuition all this time cost me nothing.
When my money was all exhausted, I launched out as a teacher, and as the educational requirements at that time were not extremely high, I succeeded in the undertaking and from then on I taught and went to school alternatively six years. Then accepted the study of medicine in which I graduated from the New Orleans School of Medicine (Tulane) in 1861. Practiced until June or July of that year.
Went out with the Dulqunese (?) Rifles of Mississippi Regiment as First Lieutenant and was elected assistant surgeon soon after. Was on the field in the Battle of Shiloh.
Health failed, resigned from my practice in 1863 and located in Holmesville where I remained until 1879. Married Esther Lucy Thomas and moved to a farm nearby where we lived happily until 1888 when we came to Poplarville at which place I have been engaged in the practice of my profession until the close of 1901.
